     During the first two years of collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory/USA a Caesium Iodid based Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector was successfully operated in the STAR detector. The RICH was originally developed as prototype for the Alice HMPID and was later adapted for STAR. It provides particle identification for pions and kaons up to momneta of 3 GeV/C and protons up to 5 GeV/c. The technical aspects and the performance of the detector will be discussed.
